John is not only an incredible guitarist - he is also an amazing lyricist and harmonizer.  His sweet falsetto blends perfectly with Anthony Kiedis's alto-tenor; in his solo albums, you can hear the emotion and passion in his voice and lyrics.  Especially in the latest, Shadows Collide With People, John's expressiveness comes through in heart-wrenching melodies like "The Slaughter" and "Carvel".

Shadows Collide With People [2004]

John's latest solo album, a continued progression from "To Record..."  Highly introspective lyrics, music varies from driving (Second Walk) to moody (Omission).  Chad Smith provides drums, Flea plays upright bass on The Slaughter.

Greatest Hits CD/DVD [2003]

Compilation of RHCP's hottest tunes, including Parallel Universe, Otherside, Scar Tissue, By The Way, and 10 others.  Includes 2 new tracks, Fortune Faded and Save the Population.  DVD has some great behind-the-scenes footage, as well as a ton of music videos and commentaries.

Live at Slane Castle DVD [2003]

A real treat!!  The Chili Peppers' concert at Slane Castle in Ireland in August 2003.  Great footage of the band.  Their energy never ceases to amaze me.  If you buy only one RHCP dvd, make it this one!

By The Way [2002]

The Chili's latest album.  Portrays a steady transformation from "Californication". Several songs include added symphony, such as Midnight and Tear.  Venice Queen was an excellent choice to end the album with.  Music for every mood.

Off the Map DVD [2001]

Mostly concert footage, some behind-the-scenes stuff.  It's a cool show, but the editing wasn't that great and it's pretty obvious that it's spliced together from more than one concert.  As always, though, the Peppers put on a great, energetic show.

To Record Only Water For Ten Days [2001]

A beautiful solo CD which displays an incredible progression from "Smile" and "Niandra".  John plays guitar, bass, and keyboards over synthesized drum tracks.  Includes Going Inside (which was also released as a single), Away and Anywhere, and the instrumental track Murderers, my favorite from this album.

Californication [1999]

The album that marks John's rehabilitated return to the Peppers.  Animated lyrics intermixed with potent guitar lixx, bass riffs, and drum funk create an intrinsic and striking portrayal of the evolution of the Chili Peppers.

Smile From The Streets You Hold [1997]

An album that was created to fund his drug habit.  After its release, John was ashamed of the ulterior motive he had for recording it, and pulled it from the shelves.  Extremely hard to find, expensive when you do find it.  It's said that John has stockpiles of it at home that he doesn't let anyone listen to.

Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt [1994]

An acquired taste.  Recorded while John was drowning in heroin, some of the melodies feel awkward to the ear, and the lyrics are not always something that everyone can relate to.  Then again, John is creating this while he's constantly fried, so there are still lessons to be learned and experience to share.

Funky Monks DVD [1991]

A behind-the-scenes look at the recording of the BSSM album.  None of the songs are played through completely.  A few good commentaries from each band member.  Great little blurb from Anthony about "Under the Bridge".  Overall a very intimate look at the band.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik [1991]

My favorite album from the first half of the Peppers' life together.  Sweet harmonies, punk & funk, sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll.  Yeah.  Includes Give It Away, Breaking the Girl, Under the Bridge, Sir Psycho Sexy, and title track.

Mother's Milk [1989]

John's very first album with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Includes Higher Ground, Knock Me Down, and Pretty Little Ditty, which evolved from John & Flea's jam together.

Other titles also released by John or RHCP:
